  • Hue Overview

Hue city is commonly known as a place of many cultural heritages. Up to now, there is no place like Hue remaining a lot of originally historical vestiges..

Hue city is located in a narrow landing strip in central Vietnam. The city is an important culture, economic, education, health, tourism, science and technology center of Vietnam. The city’s two world heritage sites and Huong River (Perfume River) creates its attraction.

Hue was the capital of Vietnam during the feudal rule from 1802 to 1945 under the Nguyen dynasty and subsequently the centre of architectural evolution of the era.

Hue City is located from 16 to 16.80 north latitude and 107.8 to 108.20 east latitude. The city borders Huong Tra district to the north and west, Huong Thuy commune to the south, and Phu Vang district to the east.

The city’s natural area is about 83.3 square km, accounting for 1.5% of total area. The average of population is 350,400 people (in 2003). The population density is nearly 4,200 people per square km.

The city’s climate is extreme. It has two distinct seasons: dry and rainy seasons. The dry season is from March to August. It is very hot and muggy; sometimes the temperature is up to 39.9 º C. The rainy season lasts from August to January. At that time, there are often floods.  The average temperature is about 19.7 º C, sometimes dropping to 8.8 º C. In this season, it has heavy rains lasting all day, even all week.

Hue City is the plain of the Huong River and the Bo River Basin with an average elevation of about 3-4 m above the sea level, so the city is often in flood. The Delta area is relatively

flat, but it also has some hills, low mountains such as Ngu Binh Vong Canh Mount, etc,

The city is also famous for the magnificent architecture of its citadels, palaces, royal tombs, pagodas and temples. Various structures are laid out in harmony with nature and in accordance with the principles of geomancy. Besides, the city has plenty monuments reminding its past glory of.

Tombs of Nguyen Kings are situated in the middle of hills on the Southern bank of Perfume River. Hue is also an important Buddhism center.  Tens of pagodas, which were constructed 300 years ago still exit in Hue and its surrounding. There are, in addition, a hundred of temples and pagodas were built in the early century.

Besides, Hue is home of royal music, traditional famous dishes and sophisticated handicraft.

Hue became Vietnam’s first World Cultural Heritage site recognized by UNESCO in 1993.

Some must-visit sites in Hue city that bring its characteristic charm are: Imperial citadel, Museum of Royal Relics, Royal tombs, King Tu Duc’s Tomb, King Khai Dinh’s Tomb, King Minh Mang’s Tomb, Dong Ba Market, Thien Mu Pagoda, Perfume River, etc.

  • Hue Citadel

In the 19th and early 20th century, Hue, in Central Vietnam, is the capital of Vietnam. The Citadel is one of the famous destinations in Hue, so tourists can not miss it when visiting Hue.

In 1804, it took much time, money and force to complete Hue Citadel. During the Nguyen Empire the Hue citadel palace complex was the center of Vietnamese governance and politics.

As approaching it, the big flag tower (Vietnamese name is Cot Co) is the first thing you will see. The main entrance to the citadel is Ngo Mon Gate, and tourists will pay entrance fee of 55,000 Vietnam Dong to visit the citadel.


The gate’s lower part is made by stone, while on the top is the “Belvedere of the Five Phoenixes”. In the important occasions, the Emperor appeared there and it is also abdicated to Ho Chi Minh’s Revolutionary Government in 1945.
Coming inside the gate, tourists will visit one of the beautiful sights: lotus pond with a bridge once reserved for emperor’s private use. Over the bridge, the Thai Hoa Palace which was used for official receptions and other important court ceremonies.
Tourists will also have a chance to see a pair of smaller halls used by mandarins for ceremonies court. It suited behind the Thai Hoa Palace and the two form a courtyard,  and things left dated in 1947 was bombed in the 1968 Tet Offensive.


The Thai Binh Lau or Royal Library, a small building, is on the one sides of the central axis of the forbidden City. There had a small pond mostly taken up by a mountain-island which is now well-grown with moss and bonsai.
Do not miss the museum at Long An palace. A long the path, between the Thai Hoa palace and the halls of the mandarins, are a couple of buildings worth a look.

In the 19th century, Vietnam was conquered by the French. Under the Nguyen empire, the people’s life were very poor and he must leave his reign. Then Bao  Dai returned over the  reins of government to the revolutionary government of Ho Chi Minh.

Size of the Hue Citadel is about 520 hectares, near the banks of the Perfume River. The inner sanctum is still open for many tourists to vis

it, as it undergoes continuous renovation.  In the Tet offensive in1967, most of the buildings were obliterated.

Directions

It is very convenient for tourist go there to visit either by taxi or by cyclo. You will be taken straight to the Hue citadel form your hotel. It

will take about two hours and includes a fair of waking.  For having a perfect trip, you need to prepare:

Entry fee to the Hue Citadel: VND 55,000 (about US$3), comfortable shoes a camera

Bottled water, alternatively, you can also buy water along some of the many refreshment stands within the Citadel Grounds

  • Hai Van Pass

Hai Van Pass stretches along the Hai Van mountain slopes, is a scenic pass on the road from Đà Nẵng and Huế, on the National Road 1A in Vietnam.

This is the highest pass (about 500 meters above sea level), full of rugged peaks and also the last of Truong Son Mountain stabbed the sea.

Hai Van Pass is tottery, one side is mountain and the other side is sea. Pass’s top is covered with cloud all year so it is called “Cloud Pass”. In Phu Bien Tap Luc, Le Quy Don once remarked:  Hai Van is under cloud and above sea.  In the past, Hai Van Pass was known as the Thuan Hoa and Quang Nam frontier. The entrance to Hai Van Quan looks like the entrance to an old citadel with its stone structures.

The mountain road is used since many centuries ago, but has been paved by the French and then enlarged by the South Vietnamese and the Americans due to its strategic position. The tunnel (length 6.28km) is newly built and is opened in 2005.

Previously, this land is belonged to O and Ri of Champa kingdom, in the 13rd century. It was wedding present of Che Man king to propose Huyen Tran Princess. On top of the pass, the trail has been left: Pass’s door and the citadel. Three words “Hai Van Quan” is carved on the gate towards Thua Thien-door and the other gate looking down on Quang Nam province is engraved “the most grandiose gateway in the world” in Vietnamese means “De Nhat Hung Quan”.  It is singled Heavenly lower most important heroes (this is from the dedication of King Le Thanh Ton when sightseeing stop here.

On the way across Vietnam through the central land full of sun and wind, the Hai Van Pass has become an ideal place for tourists inside and outside of the country. Hai Van is well known for its dangerous roads, and accident warning boards carefully appear regularly along the side. On the top of the pass, the crest of the Hải Vân Pass has a number of restaurants and rest places.


From Da Nang city along the National Highway 1A to the north, after crossing the Nam O area, travelers enter Hai Van Pass. From here, in beautiful day, visitors can clearly see panorama of Da Nang city, Tien Sa port, Son Tra peninsular, Cu Lao Cham, etc.



Passing time, the natural gifts will become humane values. Visiting Hai Van Pass is satisfactory dream about occupying the height, mixes in epics of Vietnamese.
